Luana dies at age 22, sucked into the textile machinery on which she works. A worker who died on the job is one story among many: Luana is one of the 1,400 victims for whom our economic system reserves a date with death each year.

But the young worker has one flaw: she is beautiful. Such a beautiful worker, killed by a machine that confused her with the threads she was warping, turning her into fabric in turn, is a story that excites the media’s voracity. All the more so because it leaves behind a five-year-old child from a summer fling with the son of a Calabrian ’ndrina boss, for despite her Tuscan accent, it is in Calabria that Luana’s family history sinks.

By rewinding the tape of the film that led Luana to her death, this documentary draws a portrait of the contemporary working class and highlights the value, both economic and moral, attributed to those who work in the lesser-known cogs of a system, that of Prato’s textile industry, that feeds the global fashion industry.
